still getting used to this blog format- I hope to learn how to post new information. I hope this works!

Betsy came to trim Huey today- he did great with the help of Justin holding his front legs- we didn't have time or think it was necessary to attempt the back feet at this point- the horse was stressed enough in one day to do the front.
Quite a bit of toe was taken down and alot of dead tissue on the sole and frog was carved out. We took photos for Betsy's website so she can use his feet as a before/after example. Betsy feels he should come out of this just fine and 100% sound. The angle on new hoof growth needs to grow out and it should take about a full year to accomplish that. In the meantime we will continue with regular barefoot trimming and thrush tx. and hand walking for circulation.
His open hole of the front of the right hoof was also gouged out further to allow the healing effects of direct air and sunshine on the area. Huey seemed to appreciate that we knew what we were doing and complied for the most part. I think we will see dramatic changes immediately in his comfort level.

Huey Khan
2/17/10
Huey Khan
age- approx. 5 yrs. old
backround- was trained to jump and show- has $100K talent
issues- the gelding shows problems in his front leg tendons- clearly swelled and bowed backwards- his feet are infected deeply with thrush and has uneven growth/dead tissue and an open sore which oozes blood. He hobbles gingerly and puts most of his weight on his hind legs. His left front is a bit more swollen and sore.
Attitude- Huey allows himself to be handled and groomed but is overly cautious and untrusting as one would expect- it is likely he was pushed way too hard and fast in his young life resulting in damaged legs/feet. He traditionally wore shoes and is barefoot now.
Course of Action- pick feet daily and daily foot soaking with menthol liniment( vetrolin)to stimulate circultaion, epsom salt to draw out the thrush infection, iodine and or hydrogen peroxide to kill bacteria and some essential oil for moisturizing.
3x/wk- after footbath= Topical application of dry cow and neosporin to hold the dry cow tx in.Then cover entire sole/frog with moisturizing hooflex liquid. Then cover entire sole frog with bag balm or desitin.
4x/week - after footbath- let air dry it and expose it to air.
Also grooming/ massage with liniment on front and back legs and bentonite clay on front legs to relieve stress. Spinal massage with essential oils to relax muscles/calm attitude and restore emotional balance.
maintain regular barefoot trimming.
supplements: - hoof support and electrolytes or salt lick in his stall- suspect he is losing moisture and minerals through the extra heat generated in his legs because of his problems.
Expect one full year to fully recover and be 100% sound for barefoot riding work for the rest of his life.
